A Manager's Resolution Guide for 2020

We all make personal resolutions in the New Year but what about professional ones.

This is a summary of "A Manager's Manifesto for 2020" written for The Economist. 

Here are 7 resolutions to adopt, as a manger or high level professional, in the new year. 

1) Praise 🙌🏻... give it out. Not all the time but when its truly deserved. People of course come to work to make $$ but that’s not the only reason. They also like to know that they are doing a good job. So, in this new year, give your employees specific, public praise. 

2) Set the vibe for your tribe. You determine the tone of the office and how your employees conduct themselves. An angry and frantic manager makes for angry and frantic employees. Kind, positive energy only.

3) If a team member makes a mistake, chances are that there was some miscommunication from the top down. It is your responsibility to assess and fix the issue. 

4) Make your priorities for the next year clear. Set attainable goals.

5) Like any good businessperson knows, you must constantly be listening to your clients. In that vein, for 2020, you should also be listening to your employees. They are the front line of people that are dealing with clients/customers and their feedback is essential to the development of any company. 

6) Keep meetings short. Period. 

7) Drop jargon. If you couldn't understand it on your first day, there are probably others out there that are lost in the technicalities too. Remember George Orwell’s maxim: “Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.” You want your employees to feel included, levelled with and valued-- removing shorthand and technical terms from emails is the simplest way to do this.
